Reduce Your Use
April 2, 2019

My name is Neola Castelino and I am 14 years old. I study in Our Own English High School, Sharjah.

Protecting the environment has always been my passion. I started my campaign for recycling at the age of nine.

This year I plan on campaigning and collecting as many recyclables as I can. Over the years, I’ve organized many events and activities engaging people to give back to Mother Earth through green living and recycling.

To date, I have contributed more than 14,000kgs of newspaper, 4,000kgs of aluminum cans and have recycled more than 6,000 plastic bottles at the Bee’ah Reverse Vending Machine (RVM). As a proud resident of the UAE, I am trying to give my best in making this place more green!

Some tips for being eco-friendlier:
- Try keeping the air conditioner at the optimal temperature of 24° Celsius.
- Re-use as much as possible! Reducing usage of single-use plastic like straws, plastic cups etc.
- Prevent using heavy appliances like washing machines and dishwashers during peak hours (12pm-6pm).
- Try doing your shopping using tote bags.
- Use public transport, carpool or walk whenever possible.
- Stop using disposable bowls, plates, spoons, knives and forks!
- Unplug and not just switch off appliances before going to bed.
- Last but not least, BE AWARE. We should pay attention to how we use our resources and how we can make better eco-friendly choices.

You can contact me at jnjsharjah@yahoo.com for further queries and help me widen my recycling campaign by contributing newspapers, plastic bottles, glass, old batteries, used mobiles and any other recyclables!
My name is Miral Bushnaq and I’ve been an adventurer all my life.

With that, I’ve built the Wander platform that aims to document culture, create stories and build a lifestyle of adventure and exploration.

The more time we spend outside, the more we understand how we can care for our mountains, sands and seas. The message we portray through Wander’s awareness campaigns and community highlight not just prevention but what we can give back to nature.

We aim to educate ourselves and others on how to be catalysts of sustainable outdoor living – nurturing from the core whether it is through reducing our waste, understanding how to re-use consumables or recycle materials.

A few things to keep in mind when you’re in the outdoors:
- Instead of buying plastic plates and cutlery every time you go out this season, invest in a reusable set that you can clean.
- Your fire is not a dumping station, do not burn your wrappers/tin cans in there as a method of disposal.
- Consider allocating an ashtray for the smokers to collect all cigarette butts instead of putting them out in the sand.
- On a grander scale, carpool, carpool, carpool! Reduce your emissions by enjoying the ride together.

Join our group of #cleandesert advocates on www.wander.ae/clean-deserts to receive information on how you can attend our workshops and seminars on giving back to nature and sustaining our future in the outdoors.

My name is Nathaniel Alapide and I am a sand artist.

I create large-scale murals on the beach and I use my art to spread awareness of the conservation of nature and the environment.

The best spots to dive in the UAE are around Fujairah on the east coast, or up in Musandam. Nemo Diving Centre arranges dive trips to these places.

Some pointers for underwater adventurers:
- Respect the animals that you see underwater by keeping a safe distance from them. Don't touch them.
- Pick up plastic and trash when you see them during your dive and put them in the pocket of your BCD.
- Be very careful when you're near coral reefs and be mindful of your fin kicks so you don’t damage coral.
- Make sure all your regulator hoses are kept in place and not dragging as you are diving.
- Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but bubbles, kill nothing but time.
- A direct way that people can help would be to pick up any trash that you see when on the beach or during a dive. This will encourage people that may see you doing it to do the same. Come and dive with me in Fujairah to learn more about how delicate and beautiful our sea environment is. Your future and the future of your loved ones depends on a healthy ocean.

My name is Major Ali Sultan Al Suweidi and I’m from a pearl diving family.

Our life has always been on the sea.

During the first Gulf War, while serving as a marine mine specialist, I saw first hand the devastation that the conflict was having on the Arabian Gulf.

It was when I came back to the UAE in 1995 that I founded the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) to help conserve and restore the water around the UAE. We’re known for our research and conservation activities, as well as our work with turtles, coral reef restoration, propagation and translocation, and even wildlife relocation and restoration projects.

This wasn’t my first role in marine conservation. Back in 1975, I started the Al Wasl Journey project which educated people and documented the importance and beauty of the Gulf’s many islands. I also started the Emirates Science Club to encourage students and other people to come up with innovative ways to help the marine ecosystem.

Some ways that the average person can help in protecting the environment are:
- Try to reduce the dependence on plastic by following the steps: reduce, reuse, recycle. - Make sure all waste is disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner, reducing the chance of it ending up in the ecosystem or a land fill. - Support companies that incorporate sustainable practices, such as those that make reef-safe sun creams or have products with recycled packaging. - Aim to reduce carbon emissions as much as possible. Turn your AC to a few degrees warmer and switch it off when you’re not in the room. Try to car share or walk whenever possible. - Take part and volunteer in environmental clean-ups and educational programmes. Help make sure that people are aware, particularly children, in how they can help the environment, and the potential damage they might be doing to it without realising.
